How-To Guides

I enjoy analysing informal processes and trying to formalise them. I often try to write my analyses down in the form of guidelines for doing the task. Over the course of my career I seem to have accumulated quite a collection of these `how to' guides. Some of these have been written on my own and some with the help of others. People sometimes ask me for copies of these, so I thought it might be useful to collect them together in one place.

You are welcome to use these guides in whatever way you feel helpful. The only conditions are: please acknowledge the original author(s); please do not sell them at a profit (but covering your reproduction costs is fine).

• The Researchers Bible: This is the guide to getting a PhD in AI that our Dept issues to beginning postgraduates (also ps version . and pdf version).
• Writing a Good Grant Proposal: Some notes on how to get funding for your research written with Simon Peyton-Jones. My part of this is adapted from an article I wrote for AISB Newsletter No. 40.
• Notes to Future IJCAI Programme Chairs: I wrote this guide to how to be a programme chair for a major conference after having done it for IJCAI-83. Unfortunately, the various files cited there containing more detail are probably now lost.
• Notes to CADE-12 Referees: These are the notes on refereeing research papers that I prepared for referees when I was programme chair of CADE-12 in 1994 (also pdf version).
• Grounds for Promotion to Personal Chairs: These are some notes I wrote when a member of our Faculty's Personal Chairs Committee on the grounds that we used to determine promotion and where evidence for them was to be sought (also pdf version).
• A Scientific Checklist: A list of some of the questions you should ask about your own research before placing it in the public domain (also pdf version).
• Questions to Ask of AI Research: An attempt to classify the kinds of question that a critic might ask about a piece of AI research (also pdf version) .
