The recent move of half of the NFLE head coaches from the NFLE to the XFL is
a great PR coup for the XFL management.
By using coaches from NFL Europe, coaches from a league that is 'second
only to the NFL' according to the NFL themselves they have raised the
credibility of their own league several fold.
These coaches won't have taken the decision lightly and aren't in football
for the razzamataz, they are dedicated professionals who are capable of
putting out quality sides. The NFL have said that the creation of the XFL
won't affect them but it evidently has.
Unless they can appoint coaches of similar or greater stature than those they
have lost they will be seen to be running down the NFL Europe setup, something
many fans have been saying has been happening for some time now anyway.
Will the NFL put up a firm rebuff to the XFL by getting quality replacements,
expanding NFL Europe and putting out better recompense to players ?
We wait to see.

View from the cheap seats (part iv)
Well what can I say, it was brilliant, terrific, a sight for the
heart. Something to shout about !
Siran Stacy was back in the house !
Standing ovations and
rounds of cheers for the former Claymores RB were nothing more than he
deserved for the 3 seasons he gave us. Great to see you Siran, only sorry
I couldn't find you afterwards so the kids could get your autograph (again) !
On top of all the records he set, Siran may be one of the main reasons we still
have a team, without his abilities which took us to the World Bowl, we may
have gone the way of the Monarchs, or even, in place of the Monarchs. Were
he in the NFLE now, and setting the records he did then, I am sure he would
receive attention from the NFL teams and a shot at a roster spot. The right
man, at the right time for us, just not the right time for the NFL.
The game ? Well that was great too. 9 sacks from a rampant defence kept the
Dragons out of the endzone, and a well run offence, using more of the talents
of Marcus Crandell this time, racked up 28 points giving us second
place on points difference over the resurgent Admirals ( who this week put
41 points away against Frankfurt for the loss of only 7 ). Next week its off
to Amsterdam to battle for sole ownership of the second spot in the league.
First in at QB for the Claymores was Kevin Daft who exchanged several
series wth the Dragons for no ultimate gain as both defences held out, with
the Claymores having had the slightly better field position, but the
Dragons had a long shot at a FG (49yds) at the start of the second quarter,
which fell short. Then the Coach sent on QB Marcus Crandell who started at
the Claymores 40 , engineered a drive up to the Dragons 15 and capped it
with a great strike to WR Salucio Sanford. That pleased the crowd and the
defence went on to hold the Dragons' next series.
With less than a minute left in the first half and the Dragons looking like
they were going to make this a close match, LB Jon Hesse intecepted
Graziani's attempted pass and returned it from the 43yd line to the Dragon's
11. Marcus Crandell finished it off, once more, with a TD pass to WR Donald
Sellers. A Noel Scarlett sack on Graziani (celebrated in typical pumped-up
Scarlett fashion) took us to half-time.
That was probably the breakthrough for the Claymores, although, as the Dragons
collected the kickoff after the break, they had an opportunity to repair some
of the damage but failed. A TD in each of the remaining quarters, a 5yd rush
by Aaron Stecker and a 9yd pass play from Crandell to national WR Scott Couper,
rounded off the Claymores' scoring, with national K Rob Hart missing a field
goal from 42yds in the 4th quarter.
After the match there was no sign of the players for the kids to collect
autographs. We hung around for 45 minutes or so then left (its a long trip
home from Hampden). This was a major part of the game for the kids in
previous seasons but the players haven't been showing up outside the stadium
this year so we are going to have to give it up, I think.
On the plus side:
Good showing from Marcus Crandell, who continued the promise he showed last
week
Good all round performance from the WRs, benefiting from the varied pass
calls.
Great performance from the defense, if the Dragon's QBs were not so mobile,
there would have been a further half-dozen sacks.
Minus points;
The injury to LB Brian Smith, hope it is not serious.

Week 6 - View from The Cheap Seats
Well it turned out to be a real nerve stretcher of a game, great drama just
the wrong ending. Weather was fair and there were sunny spells during the
game.
After the obligatory cheering for Mel Gibson's Braveheart speech and
the National Anthem, it was down to business.
The D stepped up and stopped the Galaxy's opening drive, as they won the coin
toss, and surprise, surprise our offence marched down the
field to put us up by 7 points. No 3 and out this time round, could
this be the point in the season where our offence takes off ?
No.
It was just the point in the season where mistakes were going to cost us the
game as the Galaxy came back with a 69yd drive for the tying TD then collected
QB Kevin Daft's fumble and turned that into a TD, followed by RB Ben Snell's
fumble for another. 21 to 7 down and the first quarter
wasn't even over.
A third fumble, this time by RB Aaron Stecker gave the
Galaxy another shot, which they turned into a FG at the start of the 2nd
quarter. 24 - 7. Shellshock !
But we hadn't got into the flow of things and it wasn't a true reflection of
what we were cabaple of, although it did give a fair idea of our suicidal
capabilities (noone can kill our game quicker than ourselves).
Back came our Defence to stop the Galaxy O (as they were to do time and again
until OT). I love this defence , watching Noell Scarlett whipping up the
guys on the bench (he really gets into a game) and the D line piling through
time and again to sack or hurry up the QB, really gets you behind these guys.
So we get the ball back, and up steps Donald Sellers to show that even if he
has only been in the country a day or two he has lost none of his magic. Sorry
it couldn't have ended on a happier note Donald. 8 catches for 113yds and 2
TDs on any other day would probably have swung it for us but not this game.
We had an option in the third quarter to kick a field goal which could have
proved to be the winning points but opted for the 4th and 1 attempt instead,
and failed. Another controversial call by our coaches there.
In OT, with the Galaxy already up by 7, I think the coach was right to go for
the 2point attempt and the win. If someone had offered us the ball at the
start of OT, at the 10yd line, we would have jumped at the chance, but I didn't
think it was very well executed. Why throw the ball so it would land out of
the endzone if it wasn't caught ? The game was over whoever caught it so it
should have been thrown where it would land inside the endzone and give our
players the absolute maximum time possible to get their hands on it and we
would know where the ball was going.
Never mind, it was great entertainment.
Plus moments -
The return of Donald Sellars, who has great hands (but we knew that from last
season)
The D line, who really stepped up to make the comeback possible
Marcus Crandell, who gave us a real deep threat and woke up our WRs (and
their CBs)
Noell Scarlett for getting so pumped up on the sidelines

(View from the cheap seats.)
The Sun blazed down on one of the best day we have had for a football match
for a long time and the Claymores did a little 'blazing' of their own, as
the 'Hounds' of the 'Highland sting' defense bit hard on the Thunder offense
and refused to let go.
I'll start with the disappointments;
The crowd was only 8,912 (according to USAtoday, but that sounds about right)
and if we can't get the people when the weather is as good as this then the
future doesn't look good (Wake up suits and get some proper advertising
going.)
There were two injuries to players during the match, CB Central McClellion
(knee) and OL Cornell Green (leg), neither continued after getting hurt but
spent the match getting treatment on the sideline (hope they both recover).
And lastly, not many players came out of the changing rooms to sign autographs
for those fans not wealthy enough to join the supporters club (that's us), but
hey that's a small niggle and I guess they didn't do it at the last home
match either because there were only a handful of autograph hunters there
(I had to leave straight after that one so I don't know) .
The kids were disappointed though.
In previous seasons there were a lot more people waiting outside the changing
room doors and if its an official decision not to send the players out that
way then its a bad one.
On the plus side.
I don't have any problems on how the team played, they were excellent.Great
running from the backs and good work from the tight ends saw us through
most of the game with the occasional bomb thrown downfield to keep them honest.
Even when they have his number Stecker is still getting the job done and
the work he is doing benefits Snell when it is his turn.
The wide receivers
aren't as much of a factor in our play this year and except for the 65 yarder
to Gibson for the TD and a few other long range attempts, they didn't show up
much in the game plan, but who can argue with this game plan which saw us
rack up 42 points to the loss of only 3.
Great defense, great hassling of the QB and the interceptions came at the
right times. The defense never gave up even when the Thunder put together
several first downs and marched into Claymores' territory on a number of
occasions.
Each time they were repulsed by charging DLs, hard hitting LBs or quick
footed DBs.The only factor I thought would go against us was tiredness as
the match progressed but the D stuck it out and lasted better than the
Thunder offense.
Marcus Crandell took over QB duties towards the end of the 3rd quarter and
relinquished them to Japanese national Takayuki Sunaga in the final 2 minute
period, to a warm reception by the crowd. Crandell ran mostly RB plays during
the time he was in, attempting only a couple of passes, while Sunaga only ran
RB plays until time expired. National WR Rowelle Blenman also made several
appearances towards the end of the match.
Late on in the game there were a lot of cheap hits and the 'personal foul'
flag could have been thrown a lot more times than it was.
Next match could be our toughest yet as we take on the Fire, in Germany.

Somewhat belatedly, following my vacation, here's my brief summary of the last
Claymores' match
Coach Criner's pre-match report in the programme asked the fans to be
patient with the offense as it hadn't quite gelled yet, and that much was
obvious with the first pass of the QB going to double coverage and an
interception. It looks like several games of relying on our running back,
Aaron Stecker, are on the cards. He proved to be a versatile RB and true to
his press is a good catcher out of the backfield. How we will fare if
the opposition decides to stack the line early, in our next match, is unknown.
Scott Couper (Nat) seemed to be the only WR on the ball last weekend, I
suspect the Admirals weren't giving him the coverage he deserved and he made
them suffer for it with his TD catch in the second quarter. The TE's saw
quite a bit of the action and the short passing game seems to be our main
complement to the rushing attack at the moment.
Defensively we faired well and several stands within the red zone showed
a little of our mettle which hopefully will transfer to the rest of the
matches. Our D-line was pretty ferocious and I lost count of the sacks (6?),
- no problems there. The secondary had a hard time making their tackles count
and too many Admirals broke free to gain extra yardage for my liking, also
the cornerbacks were a step or two off the Admirals WRs who, if the passes
had been better thrown, would have logged a couple of TDs for sure.
Overall I am happy with the result but I reckoned that the crowd was around
a poor 5000 ( the official attendance was a 'disappointing' 8726). There is
a LOT of advertising work to be done by the front office, if they don't have
the budget for a terrestrial TV ad campaign then they will need to flood
the central belt radio stations. Newspaper coverage has improved a bit
with the front page of the Edinburgh Evening News Sports Section
showing a photo from the Claymores match.
I also seem to recall that Marcus Crandell threw the 4th TD pass but perhaps
I was mistaken, although he certainly played towards the end of the game.

Today was Open Practice, which was due to start at 12noon. The weather was
overcast and there was infrequent light drizzle which eventually cleared
up to give a dry afternoon with the odd patch of sunshine.
We turned up at about 12:30 and the team was just being introduced onto the
field in front of around 200 spectators (not a great amount but given the
lack of advertising by the Claymores' what can they expect ?).
The team then went through a series of plays showing various formations, with
a running commentary by the Coach for the benefit of the audience.
Although the guys on the pitch were going about the plays half-heartedly,
(with their hands in their pockets most of the time) it was an instructive
session for those watching and I hope the Claymore's keep that part in,
in future open sessions. No real contact was made between players and the
session was only about half an hour in total.
The team then split into offense and defense and one half signed autographs
while the other encouraged the children present to take part in what is
called 'The NFL Experience' , basically a couple of blown up bouncy mats
and an automatic ball-thrower (They have to come up with a better name for
this). Those on the 'Experience' mixed pretty well
with the fans , the highlight being when three of the Claymores grabbed
Shuggie, dragged him to one of the bouncy mats then piled on top of him, at
least the kids thought it was funny and the three players thought it was
hilarious. Those signing autographs did so quite cheerfully, while still
being as laid back as ever (this is an essential trait to being a football
player apparently, even the nationals are doing it)
The action then changed to one of the inner halls in Meadowbank where
free beer and food was laid on (for all, it would seem, though not everybody
realised that and most thought the food was for the players only and perhaps
it was, I was none to sure myself).
A lot of the team were quite approachable and many fans got the opportunity
for a chat or a photograph. Eventually some of the team hi-jacked the stereo
system and decided to hold an impromptu party. They got one or two kids
involved and the occasional adult (...Ahem, no names ).
Overall it did break the ice a bit and was the Claymores' best ever attempt
at fan-team bonding (shame there were so few fans there but how much bigger
could it get before the personal touch would be lost ?).
C Jason McEndoo (Thunder 99) is apparently trying out as a long snapper
for the New Orleans Saints, along with two other team mates.
The Raiders have offered OT Barry Simms (Claymores 99) a two year deal,
following his great season last year where he made the team as a starter for
10 games.
QB Todd Bouman (Dragons 99) is likely to accept the Minnesota Vikings 1yr
offer.
