Peking University—University of Edinburgh 3+2 degree programme

Information for students starting in 2017

Introduction to the programme

The University of Edinburgh School of Informatics and the Peking University School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science have agreed a shared degree programme. Selected PKU students who have completed the first three years of their degree programme at Peking University can apply to come to the University of Edinburgh for a further two years of study. On successful completion of the programme they will receive both a BSc from Peking and an MInf from Edinburgh.

The Edinburgh programme

Students on the programme follow the normal 4th and 5th year of the Master of Informatics (MInf) programme. This is made up of both normal courses and a substantial project, spread over the two years. The possible projects for 2017 have not yet been assembled, but a list of the project titles from 2016 is available.

Programme application process and entry requirements

Early in 2017 Prof. Guo will circulate an invitation to apply. Edinburgh require The equivalent of a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (US 4-point scale) and a good working knowledge of English (see below).

An Edinburgh representative will visit Beijing in March or April 2017 for interviews—applicants will be asked to submit a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and a transcript of their first 2 1/2 years of study in advance.

Successful applicants will be notified with a week.

English language requirement

Successful applicants must either already have taken, or arrange to take as quickly as possible, either the IELTS Academic module, with an overall score of at least 6.5, and at least 5.5 in each component or the TOEFL IBT, with an overall score of 92 or above and at least 20 in each section.

University of Edinburgh application

Successful applicants must then go through the normal application to the University of Edinburgh for direct entry into 4th year, which will be automatically approved once the necessary English language qualification is reported.

Early arrival for presession

All new participants in the programme must arrive in the summer of 2017 and undertake a presession programme including both advanced English language study and preparation for being a student at Edinburgh, as well as social and cultural activities.

Scholarship

All participants in the programme receive an annual scholarship of £3000. In year 1 this covers the cost of the presession. In year 2 it is given directly to the student.

The Peking degree

After completion of their first year in Edinburgh, students are required to return to China, translate their first-year Edinburgh project report into Chinese and submit it as their final project for their Peking University degree, which will then be awarded as for all 4th-year students.
