Dr. Joanna Young

I am involved in a range of projects in the lab and on the computer. For the last six years I have been using the fruit fly, Drosophila, as a model system to study various behaviours including locomotion, learning and memory. I am particularly interested in the structure and function of a brain region called the central complex (CX), that is conserved across several insect species.

My interests also include informatics, particularly databases for storing neuroanatomy image data and libraries of genetics tools for use in the biological sciences. I am currently involved in an EPSRC funded project investigating insect inspired robotic control architectures.

In addition to my academic research, I take an interest in science communication, web development and digital media and am in the process of learning new programming languages.
