I keep an intermittent diary of my PhD work. This is a disjointed monologue of little general interest - quite blog-like in fact.

Research interests

I'm interested in relation extraction from text and in automatic ontology building, in the context of the Semantic Web and text databases.

Extra-mural activities

Gliding is what life is mostly about, but I'm also a closet Munro-bagger. Being a Member of a Royal Commission occupies me too.

Welcome to the Web site of Kate Byrne. I'm a post-doctoral researcher in the School of Informatics at Edinburgh University, specialising in computational linguistics. Before that I worked at the National Library of Scotland as Head of Computer Services.

A new recommendation for this year: check out Tullibole Castle. They run a wonderful sounding B&B and self-catering business. I love the idea of staying in an early 17th Century "laird's house" - see the Canmore entry for it. I came across the castle when I dropped in from the air on 18th March 2012: I landed just across the road in my glider, after running out of lift.
