OnSite: Building a whole new world

You are warmly invited to the Launch of the OnSite Exhibition.

5-8pm, Wednesday, 25th October, Appleton Tower Concourse, Appleton Tower, Crichton Street.

An audio tour around Potterrow using MP3 players will be available at the launch to give visitors an off-the-wall guide to the site's hidden past, present and future.

OnSite is a series of Arts and Informatics interventions on and around the building site of the new Informatics Building. It is a collaboration between the Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) and the School of Informatics.

The Onsite Project aims to engage with the public, the local community, the building contractors, the architects and the academics to help raise and challenge ideas about Informatics and Art, the new building, the history and future of Potterow.

Looking Down

Superstructure Layout

This is a schematic view of the major components of Phase 1, The Forum. The Cores (A,B,C,D) are now clearly visible in the webcam images.

Core B is visible in the foreground of the time-lapse video in the sidebar. Lift 3 descends into the basement. The basement itself extends North beyond the superstructure line by about 6m.

Office mock-up

We have a mock-up of the standard FORUM office on the 4th floor of the Appleton Tower (thanks to Hugh Cameron, Rob MacGregor and Douglas Howie for an excellently engineered construction, and to all in CISA/AIAI for hosting this mock-up). We will use this to experiment with furniture layouts and door placement. This is an abstract representation of the space; it does not try to address other important issues: finishes, lighting, decoration, services etc.

For the time being, it looks very bare. Until furniture is installed you may find it helpful to compare it with other occupied space. It is slightly (about 500mm) smaller than the adjacent printer space on level 4. Take a look and record your questions and comments on the Wiki.

On Thursday 23rd this "room" will house an audiovisual installation by students from Architecture. Drop by and take a look!

Meanwhile, piling is finished - we hope to have a formal pile-capping ceremony on 30th March - and excavation of the Forum basement is well underway.

day 9

Our first big digger

The big digger is removing the tarmac, which is being taken away.

The digger will then remove the top layer of the site to a depth of 300mm. This will be replaced with 300mm of hardcore to provide a stable platform for the piling rigs.
