Performance evaluation of 3D laser scanners

The performance evaluation of 3D laser scanners is missing in existing literature, even though 3D Laser range finders are widely used. Hence, when choosing a sensor device for a particular application there is scarce quantitative information to guide this choice. The study carried out provides quantitative tools to assess the performance of such sensors. Therefore it is a significant contribution to all the community involved in 3D laser based reconstruction.

IST completed the work on 3D Laser Scanner Performance Evaluation. A figure of merit was proposed and discussed with all the partners, and instantiated with data from one particular LRF and scanner device. Details can be found in a report, which includes a set of results produced with the JRC's laser scanner. UOE has completed construction of several accurate (0.1 mm) scanner comparison test objects that will be used to further compare scanner performance.
