Abstract:

This introduction reviews different architectures for the recognition of three-dimensional objects. We compare the basically different approaches of object centred and viewer centred representations. The overview includes a discussion of biological findings and computational aspects. Advantages of viewer centred models are illustrated by some recent recognition systems consisting of different kinds of artificial neural networks.

Keywords: 3-D object recognition, object centred representation, viewer centred representation, temporal associations, view sequences, artificial neural networks
