Me: past, present and future
I am Chen (Roger) Zhao (a.k.a. livepine in the cybernet :)), a Chinese student studying in the United Kingdom. Currently I am doing a 4-year PhD programme in the
Neuroinformatics Doctoral Training Centre in the
School of Informatics,
University of Edinburgh, UK.
“
Neuroinformatics” (also called computational neuroscience) is a newly coined word indicating the interdisciplinary research area which incorporates computational methods to study the brain. The ultimate goal of this area is to quantitively understand the underlying mechanism governing the neural system, like the mathematical framework ruling the physical dynamics. Personally, in a long-term perspective I am fascinating about the engineering application of such understanding, e.g. (really) intelligent machine. For this PhD programme I will be looking at high level mammalian visual system, e.g. face recognition. More details can be found at my
works section.
In year 2004-2005 I studied at the
University of Bristol in the United Kingdom and got (indeed, very tough) the degree of
MSc in Advanced Computing in the route of Machine Learning and Data Mining. Before that (2003-2004) I studied at the
University of York (in York City) in the United Kingdom and finished the course of
MSc in Information Processing (sounds bizarre? it's a conversion course to computer science).
I am populating some stuff showing my background (or rather, history) briefly in a table.
| 09/2005 - present |
PhD (candidate) in Neuroinformatics, University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom |
| 09/2004 - 09/2005 |
MSc in Advanced Computing (Machine Learning and Data Mining), University of Bristol, United Kingdom |
| 10/2003 - 09/2004 |
MSc in Information Processing with Distinction, University of York, United Kingdom |
| 09/1999 - 06/2003 |

I have no formal working experience, but I have led or participated
many projects concerning web programming and design in the past few years. You can see much more details in my curriculum vitae (
full version,
compact version and
Chinese version available as well) and at my
works section.
Future is unpredictable but I am quite lucky that I have found a way to go. My long-last dream is to contribute to a realistic vision machine comparable to human performance - recognition, classification and decision. This is also a great step towards the real intelligence. I have been deeply fascinated by computer since early 1990s. Though the passion is still there, even greater passion has been devoted to a computer in its superior form - human brain. It's a lot of fun as well as challenges to play with this possibly the most sophisticated machine in the unknown universe.
