Applied Databases Tutorials
- Tutorial 1 Basic SQL Queries (27th September 2006)
- Tutorial 2 Further SQL Queries (4th October 2006) with some example answers
- Tutorial 3 (11th October 2006) is in two parts:
- Part A Other SQL Commands
- Part B Introductory Database Design
- Tutorial 4 (18th October 2006) is in three parts. The second part (on basic web page
creation) will be very familiar material for some, who can
skip over that. For those who have never done any web
programming before, however, this will be useful background for
later exercises which will involve designing a web site that
connects to a database of your creation. The third part has some more questions to
think about if you've got through all the previous tutorials and
the questions here very quickly.
- (Further tutorials to follow...)
- Tutorial 5 Catching Up and Database
Discussions (25th October 2006) Since no one has
strongly objected to this plan, this session is for catching up
on the past exercises (if you need to) and working on the next
assessed exercise. In addition, if you want to discuss your
ideas for your database-backed web application, then at 4pm
we'll have a group discussion along those lines.
- Tutorial 6 (1st November 2006)
Basic Python. In a change to our initial plans
for this course, we will be implementing the web application you
are designing in Python. (Since you had previously been told
that we would be implementing this application in PHP, this may
create problems for anyone who has already started some
significant amount of implementation. If this is the case,
please contact me and we will arrange to still support you in
some way.)
- Tutorial 7 (8th November 2006)
Python, CGI and PostgreSQL. This tutorial will
take you through some examples of using Python for CGI scripts
and how to programmatically access PostgreSQL. This may all
look intimidating, but please don't panic :)
