Stella Frank

Currently I'm a researcher at the Institute for Language, Cognition, and Computation at the School of Informatics in the University of Edinburgh, working with Sharon Goldwater.

I finished my Ph.D. in 2012, which was supervised by Frank Keller and Sharon Goldwater. During my Ph.D. I did a research internship at Google with Massimiliano Ciaramita. Once upon a time, I was a member of BLLIP.

I'm interested in questions of language acquisition and learnability: how do children make use of the input available to them to learn all the different aspects of language? Much of my work has involved showing that learning multiple aspects at once is helpful, rather than focusing on one aspect at a time: this suggests that (optimal) children take a holistic, rather than reductionist, approach to language learning.
I approach these problems from a Bayesian modelling perspective, which means I spend too much time debugging stochastic samplers.
