  • grown up in Forchheim (Bavaria/Germany)
  • studies of computer science at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg with focus on pattern analysis (chair H. Niemann), subsidiary subject electrical engineering with focus on telecommunications, chair H.W. Schüssler
  • 1993 to 1999 working at the Institute for Communication Research and Phonetics (chair W. Hess), University of Bonn, on prosody recognition and synthesis (the VERBMOBIL project and my own follow-up project )
  • 1998 PhD degree (rer.nat.) in computer science and phonetics at the University of Bonn: "Automatische Erkennung von Satzmodus, Akzentuierung und Phrasengrenzen in einem sprachverstehendem System" (Automatic recognition of sentence modality, accents, and phrase boundaries in a speech understanding system).   • 1999 to 2003 Senior Technical Staff Member at AT&T Labs Research. working mainly on speech synthesis, also involved with Visual TTS and NLU ;
  • Research Fellow at CSTR in Edinburgh, working on Expressive Prosody for Unit-selection Speech Synthesis, Automatic Target Cost and Database Design for Unit-selection Speech Synthesis and Viennese Sociolect and Dialect Synthesis.
  • Since 2010 Visitor at CSTR, contract work for IVO Text-to-Speech Voices.
  • Since 2011 Research Architect at Daxtra Technologies in Musselburgh (near Edinburgh), working on written instead of spoken language.
