Three PhD Opportunities: Mathematical Analysis of Computational Functions
Join us at the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, internationally recognised for leading research in theoretical and applied Computer Science and AI. Three fully-funded 3-year PhD positions are available in synthesis and verification of computational functions, helping drive future advances in software and hardware design. The positions are available from September 2025, supported by Huawei Research Cambridge. The three topic areas are:
- Deriving combinatorial functions and logical abstractions.
- Parallel and serial scheduling for algebraic expressions.
- Deriving computations from functional specifications.
Candidate Profile
We are seeking exceptional candidates to tackle these projects:
- Bachelor or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or similar with a 2:1 or equivalent.
- Strong foundation in Mathematical Logic, Formal Methods, or Theoretical Computer Science.
Key Attributes
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to focus on individual PhD research but also collaborate effectively within a wider research team.
- Excellent communication proficiency in both written and verbal formats.
- Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary computer science and mathematics research and latest technologies.
Relevant Technical Skills and Interest Areas may include:
- Proficiency in formal logic and theorem proving tools such as Isabelle, Rocq, or Lean.
- Experience with automata theory and building computation models.
- Familiarity with program verification, performance modelling or hardware description.
- Knowledge of static analysis, model checking and related tools.
- Understanding of algebra, geometry, and category theory for algorithm development.
- Programming ability in suitable languages, such as Haskell, Python, C++, or Java.
- Previous research or industry involvement in any of these topic areas would be an advantage.
What We Offer
- A vibrant research environment with access to state-of-the-art resources and facilities.
- Collaboration opportunities with industry experts and leading academics.
- Competitive funding and support for participation in academic conferences and events.
- The chance to contribute to high-impact projects with real-world applications.
