Small halogen lamps are now also used inside
reflector lamps and some
"incandescent-sized" lamps to make a lamp which is slightly more efficient than
incandescents but is no larger.
Tubular halogen lamps are used in trough-shaped reflectors for outdoor
spotlights.
The features of halogen lamps are hard to find in other lamps. In some applications it may be possible to replace halogens with metal halide or color-corrected high pressure sodium lamps. Since these suggested replacements are electric discharge lamps it would be necessary to provide a ballast. In general this will mean replacing the luminaire as well.
