Workplan:
This project should be assessed on (i) the quality of its scientific
output, as measured by the papers it produces; (ii) the utility of the
methods developed for prediction of resource consumption; and (iii)
the impact of the research on the operational practices of
e-Scientists. Whilst we have tried to structure the project as
precisely as possible, it should be remembered that by the very nature
of original research, it is difficult to be certain of the position
towards the end of a long-running project. Innovations from the
beginning of the project can bring about new possibilities which
cannot be predicted now. For this reason our work in the final year
of the project is less tightly prescribed than our work in the first
year. It is also possible that progress on units of the work might be
either slower or faster than is indicated in the diagrammatic workplan
given in Part 3.
Points to note about the plan of work include the following.
- The work is planned over a 42-month period. This is the union
of two non-aligned 36-month periods, the second of which begins six
months after the first. Months 0 to 36 are the work of the two
RAs. Months 6 to 42 are the work of the two PhD students.
- The diagram primarily reflects the work of the two RAs. For
this reason there are two parallel activities ongoing throughout
most of the project. One task (Task 2.3) is very likely to
be given to one of the PhD students.
- The work of the PhD students is of a more exploratory nature,
led by innovation, and less closely planned. It is likely that one
student will apply the ideas from the project to different
implementation technologies. The other PhD student will apply the
tools and ideas to one or more real-world e-Science applications
furnished by our colleagues who are working e-Scientists. It is
likely that the second student will be jointly supervised by someone
from the University of Edinburgh's departments of Astronomy or
Biology.
