Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, Vancouver, 10-12 October 2002

Abstract

What does it mean to be a computing professional? What sort of work does a person who is a computing professional do? This panel considers what this term means to university students who expect to become computing professionals. The panel will present information on trends, stereotypes, and gender differences in computing career perceptions from students in five universities. The universities are located in different countries. The panel will discuss differences in perception of where computing will lead women and what influenced the development of the perceptions. After the presentations, discussion will cover how best to challenge and broaden those perceptions and attempt to identify ways to promote or market our courses to increase their appeal to women.
