  A lack of offense and a corresponding drop in the power rankings show where our problems lie at the moment.
  The week 1 crushing of the Dragons was more than duplicated by the Galaxy, showing that the Dragons are currently a poor side, and our 10 point total against the Fire shows what happens when we come up against a reasonable defense.
  Hopefully this will be the wake-up call that our team needed and it will be the Galaxy who are resting on their laurels next week

  The Claymores will hold a 'pep rally' at the St. Enoch's centre, Glasgow, this Thursday, April 11, from 6.30pm-8pm. Players, coaches, cheerleaders and the infamous mascots will be in attendance.
  I wouldn't normally encourage people to break the 10' exclusion barrier around mascots such as Shuggie and Hamish but there is the possibility that the Glasgow police will be busy elsewhere, probably placing exclusion orders on cuddly toys because they inevitably lead to 'people size' mascots which could lead to these mascots inciting the children to riot inside stadia. {Note for the police bureaucrats: The above is a joke (see under 'humour' in a 'non-police issue' dictionary}

  It looks like the Admirals had around 100 fans attend their fan day by the Amsterdam Arena
  At least that's my interpretation of the message on their website, Dutch is not my strong point, however.

  Their front office obviously appreciates that the best place to get the team seen is in the town centre. No doubt those passers by who stopped to look at what was going on were included in the numbers and possibly some were persuaded to go to the next match.
  Lesson for the Claymores FO here, don't just "preach to the converted".

  Fan Open Day at Murrayfield
  The Claymores' Fan Day at Murrayfield was probably the best attended of any I have seen in the Edinburgh area in recent years. The weather couldn't have been better with bright sunshine and clear skies. It might not have been as warm as Tampa but for Scotland you won't find many better days in the month of May.
  Several hundred people turned up at the backfields of Murrayfield to meet this season's team. Unfortunately this was the point where the Claymores' PR hype (see http://www.claymores.co.uk/news/2002/04/02fanday.shtml) met reality and a number of organisational blunders/misdirections? became apparent.
  I can understand the team not actually training inside the stadium I think even the most optimistic fan realised that wasn't going to happen and that the Murrayfield backfields were where the action was going to be, despite the Claymores' website showing a picture of the inside of the stadium with the caption
  " Murrayfield is the venue for the fan open day "
  Add to that a lack of public conviences, leading to people using the nearby Murrayfield Wanderers (Rugby) Club House (much to the Club's annoyance).
  Security guards turning back fans from entering the hired suites in the stadium after the MC had announced to everyone that the suites were open.
  The team lunching "..with their supporters inside the stadium" , (only they were lunching in one room and the supporters in another).
  the cost of buying snacks (1.00 stlg. for a mars bar - normal price about 35p, 2.50 for a hamburger)
  ... and we begin to realise that although great things may be demanded from the team this season, the general management obviously doesn't feel the need to show them the way.
  
  Missing from the following advertised attractions;

  "Claymores high-powered offence taking on the team's hard-hitting defence"
  were;

  Grudgingly accepted from the PR advertising;
  "the Claymores Fan Open Day will also feature the club's cheerleader squad"
  6 girls were there and did a dance routine for the crowd and signed autographs (nice girls, very good with the kids, but doesn't constitute a 'squad' in my book. Poorest turnout for a while )
  
  "the new squad being put through their paces by head coach Dahlquist"
  - The offence , unopposed, showed several different formations they might use in a match (about 3 or 4) as called by the offensive coach. Then the defence (with a little bit more enthusiasm despite also having no opposition) showed a similar number of formations as called by the defensive coach. Coach Dahlquist said a few words along the lines of 'thanks for being great fans and supporting us today' and that was it.
  I don't have any problems with that but it seems that several years back (at Meadowbank) they at least made a better job of it and could go a long way towards making it better yet.
  
  Happily accepted as advertised;

  The youngsters playing flag football had an appreciative crowd and were warmly applauded for their efforts. Several Claymores' players joined with the spectators in cheering them on.
  
  "The gridiron stars will mingle with fans, sign autographs, pose for pictures."
  They all seemed willing to do this and its appreciated. They probably don't enjoy answering the same inane questions over and over again but they all bore them stoically. The kids love getting autographs (although with some trepidation, as some of these guys must look like giants to them. ) and one of my sons was pleased to be recognised by a returning player (Robert Flickenger), such small things make up for the disappointments elsewhere.
  
  While most of the organisational blunders/mishaps/apathy by the general management have been quickly forgotten by the children in favour of the things the players have written or said to them, they really shouldn't be relying on the team to pull their event out of the fire.
  I go to put faces to team names, so any event where the team is present is a succesful one for me but the Claymores Front Office should note that the first thing my two year old daughter said to her grandmother was "Shuggie wasn't there, Granny !"
  

  In a related note to the last sentence above, their was an article in the Sunday Post about the Claymores' mascot now being banned from going within 10 feet of any children at Hampden stadium and also from going into the crowd.
  This is a legacy left to us from the soccer mascots aparently, where they have been accused of inciting violence from the supporters. Strathclyde police are unwilling to concede an exception to the Claymores even although it is an entirely different sport based on families with young children having fun. (Absurdity reigns supreme among the blinkered police bureaucrats of Glasgow)
  Thankfully Lothian and Borders police, who will be responsible for the game at Murrayfield have no such restrictions, so there will be at least one match where my daughter will get to shake hands with Shuggie

• Some of the unusual tags that teams have been placing on players have been explained by NFL Europe. The 48 man roster will include two practice squad players who will be inactive for matches and available to any team that has injuries and also two active players who are available to play but can also be re-assigned to any team that needs them .

  I guess what NFLE have done is to create the nucleus of a reserve team, out of the guys who were at camp, who will be given first option to join another team when there are injuries. This isn't so different from what they did last year only they had no players obviously designated and they had to fly them over as and when.

  The Thunder report on the weekend's scrimmage does show a marked improvement for the Claymores offence. The Thunder PR confesses to having the poorer performance in the first half and only mentions the one QB sack.
  Their TDs came by way of a 26yd pass and an interception and it doesn't appear that their offence racked up any big plays against our defence.
  The NFL Europe report concentrates mainly on what the Thunder acheived without giving the impression that they were the better team.

• The Galaxy website reports the Claymores-Thunder scrimmage as 17-14, the Dragons-Admirals as 20-10 and Galaxy-Fire as 7-2.
  
  Well the one good thing about the Claymores' website this year is that they have the fastest reports out of camp, albeit slightly rose tinted. What I take out of their most recent report is this;
  As far as I can tell we tied the scrimmage (2TDs each?). We put together a bit of a running game and best of all it looks like we really did give our free agent QBs a shot at staking their claim for a roster spot with an even number of shots each for the FAs and slightly more for Dreisbach (No mention of Hendricks however). It looks like noone let the side down so that's a tough call for the coaches, unless they already let Hendricks go.
  Reports from some of the fans on the ground have given Stafford the thumbs up, coming from an early interception to a strong 70yd drive using the no huddle offence.
  The only thing I have noticed over the course of the camp is that there has been no great evidence of TE activity. Its been pretty quiet on the TE front and it looks like we only have 3 left on our roster anyway so they would all be expected to make the squad. The coaches must be happy with them however as there seems to have been little in the way of competition here.
  Sounds like a good scrimmage from the Claymores to end camp with but I'll withhold judgement until I get a look at other reports (Oh alright then, an initial 'good' rating, subject to evidence to the contrary)

  In a rather quick turnaround of PR style, the Claymores have entered a second assesment of this weekend's performance which is more in accordance with the views of those elsewhere (NFL Europe and fans in attendance), the first report now being consigned to the plays of the day reports. Could it be that now there are fans on the ground giving their own views that the positive spin is hard to keep up ?
  The report points out more of the failings in the recent scrimmage and gives credit to the Admirals QB performances against our defence. This is the first report I have read that mentions the word 'disappointed' in relation to the coaches quotes.
  Despite the Claymores PR now reaching a level of realism more in line with my own views I still believe that we have the makings of a good team here. There may be one or two guys need to step up in the offense but I'm still hopeful our defence will keep us in the hunt until the offense can gel.

• Check out the fan forum at TDC for some really depressing Claymores' camp comments, from the guys who are there and have been scoping out the training and scrimmaging :{
  The rosy outlook from the Claymores PR report on yesterdays scrimmage has been somewhat tarnished by the report now lodged on the NFL Europe site.
  The Claymores - Admirals scrimmage report has thrown up a few 'facts' that the Claymores' PR have left out. We conceded another 5 sacks, while notching only 3 of our own. The Admirals QBs all received mentions for their pass completion percentage (a total of 208yds), while only two of the Claymores QBs received a mention (a combined total of 92yds). The offense allowed a 61yd interception return for a TD and the defence gave up a 10yd touchdown and a 37yd TD pass.
  The NFL Europe report definitely gives the edge to the Admirals in my opinion. I'll downgrade that 'good' rating to a 'mediocre' and hope for improvements in this last week.

• From the Claymores PR it appears that the team have put together a reasonable performance against the Admirals in today's scrimmage. Our defence apparently posted 3 sacks and the play of our corners and linebackers has come in for some praise. The offence managed to create running room for at least one of our RBs, Herbert 'Whisper' Goodman, who clocked up 40yds in 6 rushes and QB, James Brown, may have staked a claim for one of the available backup spots with two touchdown throws in 7 on 7 drills from the red zone.
  We have gained two exemptions from the first round of cuts due today, for players late into camp through no fault of their own, so there will only be three players cut apparently.
  
  In a seperate report on the Claymores' camp, from the NFL Europe website, the TE's have come in for a favourable mention (which is good because they have been an integral part of our playbook in recent seasons) and the quality of our defence was once again mentioned.
  
  So, it sounds like this scrimmage was a useful one and I would even class it as 'good' at this stage in the camp. More productivity from the RBs indicates a better O-line performance and whilst the Claymores' have never mentioned any sacks allowed I don't see any mention of 'testing the O-line' or similar ,dubious, spin doctoring this time round.
  
  A recent check on the Fire website has turned up their report on the combined workout with the Claymores last Wednesday. The Fire's PR noted that they held the Claymores' to 3 completions out of 18 attempts for only 20yds gained, in one of the drill sessions (which confirms my worries about our offence). They also mentioned that they had 3 defensive linemen who were out injured,at the time of the workout.

• The second round of combined workouts have now passed with the Claymores PR once again claiming a good workout but admitting that our O-line were given a tough test (deliberately apparently). Our running game didn't feature much however and the PR stated that our best attempt was 2 rushes for 7 yds and that the hope had been to complete 4 out of 6 during rushing drills but we sometimes only managed 2 out of 6.
  NFLEurope.com once again mentioned that our O-line gave up 6 sacks, which is worrying, but they also gave our defence credit for holding the Fire to 4 completions from 10 attempts during full scrimmage action.
  So it looks like the concerns of the first workout are still valid. Where's our O-line ? Is the coach deliberately stretching them as the Claymores' PR claims or is this the spin doctors at work ?
  It is extremely difficult to judge whether our RBs are any good at the moment. Are we failing to log significant rush yardage because the O-line is not providing the holes or are the RBs unable to take advantage of what's there ? Neither the Claymores nor NFLEurope have given much coverage to our RBs over the last two workouts, indeed they have been conspicuous by their absence from the NFLE site, which has mentioned the RB yardage of at least one RB from each of the other teams.
  I think that this workout still qualifies in the 'workmanlike' category and we have yet to see the best of this seasons camp workouts. I look forward to the first scrimmage and cuts this weekend, then we'll get a better idea of how our O-line really is working.

• The first round of workouts have gone by and the Claymores' PR have rated it as a good practice for the Claymores' with special mention to the good completion rate of all our QBs and the only interception of the scrimmage by CB Keith Heyward Johnson.
  NFLEurope.com (being a little more general in its coverage) mentioned that our QBs got sacked 5 times and that Galaxy QB, Joe Hamilton, a late entry into camp, still managed 5 of 6 passes for 45yds against our full defence.
  Galaxy.de (being biased in favour of the Galaxy) were happy with their practise, pointing out that Joe Hamilton had only spent one day in practise with the team and that in pass defense drills the Claymores only managed 9 completions out of 21 pass attempts
  While the maths doesn't seem to add up here, I think, reading between the lines that the Claymores' had a workmanlike, if not stellar, performance against the Galaxy and that we may require more work on our offensive line. For the Galaxy it would appear that Joe Hamilton could be the real deal.
  

  New Orleans Saints WR Onome Ojo, playing in NFL Europe with the Rhein Fire, will leave camp for two weeks to get medical attention for an inflamed groin. Ojo said he was originally injured during practices with the Saints last season and the injury became worse, flaring up three days ago. He said it isn't anything serious but he'll undergo rehab for the next two weeks.

  OT Barry Simms (Claymores 99) has signed a new contract with the Oakland Raiders for 4 years with an optional 2 more if the Raiders elect to do that.
