Mercury Vapor Lamps

Common uses and advantages

Mercury vapor lamps were the first high intensity discharge lamps to be commercially available. Most models produce a bluish-white light.

Mercury vapor lamps have been used as outdoor lighting for streets and parking lots and have also been used as indoor lighting in factories and gymansiums. They are much more energy efficient than incandescent lamps and have a much longer life.

Other options to consider

Mercury vapor lamps are declining in popularity.

For the same energy efficiency metal halide lamps have better color rendering properties and are now often preferred for indoor applications. For outdoor applications high pressure sodium with its golden-white light is often preferred for its better energy efficiency.
