Suppose we have a number of 2-D points and we wish to obtain the best fit of a parameterized curve through them. First we must derive a measure of quality of fit of a curve to the data using the statistical considerations given in Section 1. We can then choose parameters which give the best quality of fit using the optimization methods given in Section 2.
