Operator Interactive Experimentation

There are two sets of Java programs for interactive exploration of the image processing operators:

  1. Individual worksheets for each of the operators
  2. A tableau whereby operators can be connected together. The output of operators can be input into the other operators. This allows experimentation with a more natural sequence of operators, as might be encountered when solving an image processing task. Along with the tableau comes a set of example networks that illustrate standard groups of image processing operators (as well as how to use the operators here).

To run these JAVA applets, you need to have Java 1.2 or higher (also known as Java 2) and the Swing widget set. You can get these plugin's from SUN's web site: http://java.sun.com/products/plugin/.

It's impossible to try out the applets on all configurations of browser and operating system, but we know of successful exploration using: Java 1.2-1.4, Netscape 4.75, Internet Explorer 5.50, Solaris and Windows 2000 Pro.

If you try lots of the applets in succession without exiting from your browser, then JAVA will probably hang. You will need to increase Java's working memory, by entering a -mx64M -ms32M into the Java Plug-in Control Panel. Placement of the control panel will be installation dependent, but you might find it by opening this file: file:/opt/NSCPcom/j2pi/ControlPanel.html. On Netscape, use: Communicator->Tools->Java Console. On Internet Explorer, use: Start->Settings->Control Panel and click on the Java Console.

A list of the known Java bugs is here.
